Tesla Issues Massive Recall Over a Potentially Terrifying Failure

Tesla is recalling more than 475,000 of its Model 3 and Model S electric vehicles due to a pair of safety issues with the rearview camera and the trunk, both of which could increase the risk of crashing. And yes, this is an actual recall, rather than the easier software update recalls we’ve seen from Tesla in the past.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the company must recall around 350,000 Model 3 vehicles covering 2017-2020. This recall is a safety issue with the rearview camera that may stop functioning, impair rear views, and potentially cause a crash. In addition, the report states a faulty wiring harness is to blame, which can get damaged over time.

Tesla’s second recall is potentially worse and far more terrifying. Those with a Model S from 2017-2020 may get a recall letter for the front hood latch, also known as the frunk. This recall targets nearly 120,000 vehicles. The NHTSA reports that the front trunk latch could fail to lock, causing the frunk to open at random, potentially while you’re driving. Obviously, that’s a very dangerous and scary scenario you’ll want to remedy immediately.

It’s worth noting that Tesla has faced a few other issues lately. Still, most of those have included optional software update recalls, like the phantom braking some drivers experienced after a self-driving OTA update. Not to mention earlier this month, it issued an update to disable gameplay on the front infotainment display while vehicles were in motion.

Unfortunately for owners, both of these latest issues are physical hardware recalls. And if you’ve ever had the hood open while you’re driving, you know how terrifying that can be.

According to the NHTSA, owners of affected vehicles can expect a recall letter by the end of February with further details and instructions.
