Tesla’s Money-Saving Referral Program Could Make a Comeback

Free Supercharging miles? Yes please!

Tesla discontinued its popular referral program on vehicles in September of 2021, which gave owners free Supercharging credits when someone used their link. It was a sad day for owners everywhere, but now it could be making a return with even more to offer.

For those unaware, in the early days of Tesla, the referral program was a big deal. If someone bought a new car with your link, you could get between 1,000-5,000 free Supercharger miles. Some of the top earners even received a free Tesla Roadster, new sets of wheels, and racked up thousands of charging credits.

When Tesla ended the program on September 18th, 2021, the in-app notification and last communication said, “we are not offering Referral awards until further notice.” Leaving the door open for a return.

And while we doubt Tesla will ever give out free cars again, the latest app update strongly hints at a return for the money-saving referral program. A Twitter account dedicated to tracking and digging through Tesla app updates noticed some source code changes that all but confirmed the referral program could resurface.

Digging through the source code shows several new additions in the latest Tesla app update. Details that weren’t in the previous versions. This mention all sorts of Tesla referral program rewards, from Supercharger miles, discounts and codes for merch from Tesla’s online store, car accessories, and more. We even see several mentions of new “referral challenges” that owners can “start” almost like a game.

I don’t know about you guys, but getting free Supercharging miles sounds pretty great. Or, save up your credits for some accessories, Tesla merch clothing, or maybe a Cyberquad for Kids if it ever comes back in stock.

Unfortunately, we have no way of knowing if Tesla plans to bring the referral program back or when. That said, this strongly suggests it could return sooner than later.
