Earlier this month, the 10 original Star Trek films exited Paramount+, the “home of Star Trek.” The unexpected beam out left many Trekkies wondering where their favorite movies would rematerialize and when. Now, we know that Captains Kirk and Picard, along with their respective Enterprise crews, will return to streaming on HBO Max starting November 1st.
TrekMovie reports that the move to Warner Brother’s platform is part of a licensing agreement that predates Paramount+’s formation in 2021. When the terms of that arrangement expire, the films will likely return to Paramount+ to rejoin the rest of the Trek family.
Deals like those between Paramount and Warner Brothers (the owners of Paramount+ and HBO Max, respectively) are common in Hollywood. However, with the streaming wars raging, owners of big franchises like Star Trek will likely hold their intellectual property more closely for exclusive content on their streaming platforms.
The 10 classic Star Trek films include Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn (1982), Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984), Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986), Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989), Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991), Star Trek: Generations (1994), Star Trek: First Contact (1996), Star Trek Insurrection (1998), and Star Trek: Nemesis (2002).
Licensing nightmares aren’t new for Star Trek. For years, franchise ownership was split between Paramount and CBS. Paramount lost the rights to the 10 classic films to CBS but then bought a license to create new movies, which is how we got the alternate-universe Kelvin Timeline films.
So, when it comes to Hollywood and your favorite shows, you only know what will happen once it does (when does Star Trek 4 come out again?), which is why you must own your favorite movies on physical media. If you have a Blu-ray backup, you’ll never have your Trek binge-watching plans canceled by California collective.
