Last night, Twitter updated its Android app and broke it entirely. Any attempt to load Twitter would fail immediately and shunt you back to the home screen. We’ll go ahead and deliver the good news: the company already pushed another update to fix the problem, so download that now.
What Happened?
In a tale as old as time, good intentions led to bad consequences. Twitter sent out an update with the following changelog:
The company was right, you really couldn’t see the changes. Every attempt to load Twitter after taking the update would fail. The app would show the splash screen for just a moment, then immediately close. Not the improvements the company was promising.
Twitter noticed pretty quickly, and the Support account tweeted an acknowledgment of the problem, which in retrospect doesn’t help Android users much since they can’t load the app to see the tweet. But that was the final word on the matter as of this writing.
The good news is that while we were looking at the problem, we discovered another update for the app waiting on the Google Play Store. Taking the update solved the crash for two different phones we had on hand.
So it seems Twitter found the source of the problem and pushed the update. If you download that now, it should help you if you see the same crash.
