When you check the weather on your phone, you naturally want results that are relevant to your location. That’s what makes the Dark Sky app so fantastic. It provides “hyperlocal weather reports” that will even announce when a drizzle stopped in your area. Or at least it did if you’re on Android. Apple is buying the company and killing the Android app.
The news comes directly from Dark Sky today, which explained in a statement today that it would discontinue its Android and Wear OS apps. As the company put it:
Our goal has always been to provide the world with the best weather information possible, to help as many people as we can stay dry and safe, and to do so in a way that respects your privacy.
There is no better place to accomplish these goals than at Apple. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to reach far more people, with far more impact, than we ever could alone.
Android fans of the Dark Sky app might beg to differ on that last part, seeing as they won’t have access to the app anymore. The app is still available to download in the Google Play store right now, but Dark Sky says it will remove the app from the Play Store.
Additionally, service to existing users will stop after July 1st, 2020. The company plans to refund subscribers who are active when service stops. The company also discontinued new signups for API access today.
If you’re an iPhone or iPad user, the app will continue to work as usual.
