Sony’s $200 WF-1000XM3 wireless earbuds are considered to be some of the best on the market, with a tight low-end, effective noise-cancellation, and premium touch controls. The company’s newest true wireless offering, called the WF-XB700 or EXTRA BASS wireless earbuds, promises to push the bass even further and costs just $130.
More bass for less money? I’m all in. We won’t know how good these earbuds sound until we use them in person, but we assume that they’ll sound similar to the more expensive WF-1000XM3 earbuds—just with more bass.
It seems that Sony brought the cost down on these EXTRA BASS buds by leaving out extra features, like active noise cancellation or transparency modes. But that’s fine, as it gives Sony the opportunity to focus on core features. Along with its bass-heavy sound, the WF-XB700s feature touch controls, an 18-hour (total) battery life, 10-minute fast charging, and IPX4 sweat resistance.
Now, just to clarify, Sony isn’t replacing its famed WF-1000XM3 earbuds with the new WF-XB700s. The WF-XB700s are simply a mid-range option, like the Apple AirPods or the Jabra Elite 65ts. Sony hasn’t clarified when the WF-XB700 earbuds will ship, but pre-orders are set to open this month.
