[Updated] HBO GO and HBO NOW Won’t Work on Older Apple TVs Starting April 30th

HBO, Apple

“In order to provide the best streaming experience,” HBO will remove its HBO NOW and HBO GO services from 2nd and 3rd gen Apple TVs on April 30th. This may not come as a surprise to 2nd or 3rd gen Apple TV users, as the devices are nearly 10 years old and considered obsolete in the eyes of Apple.

Update 4/10/2020: Good news, HBO decided to push back the termination date 15 whole days. The apps will now stop working on May 15th.

The original report is left intact below.

Just to be clear, HBO is simply dropping app support for older Apple TV units. You can still cast HBO to your Apple TV using Apple AirPlay. If that’s too inconvenient for you, then this might be a good time to buy a new Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD.

If you aren’t sure which Apple TV you own, you can identify it using Apple’s website. Or just look at your remote control—2nd and 3rd gen Apple TVs come with an aluminum model, while newer Apple TVs are packaged with a black Siri Remote.
