15 LEGO Sets That Are Perfect for a Long Weekend

If you’ve gained a lot of free time recently, you’re probably looking for some new projects to fill it with. LEGO sets can be perfect for this, and while the small- and medium-sized sets that make up most of LEGO’s catalog can be finished relatively quickly, LEGO has plenty of more complicated sets that can easily eat up multiple days.

To be clear, we’re not just talking about the biggest sets LEGO creates—figuring that out is as simple as looking at the piece counts. Rather, we’re highlighting sets that bring a level of complexity to the building process whether that’s through small intricate details or complex inner mechanisms.

A Slick Spy Car: LEGO Creator James Bond Aston Martin (1295 Pieces)

Speeding onto your shelf from the big screen, this silver roadster was faithfully created in brick form with no detail spared. The interior is full of buttons and levers (some that actually work) and the exterior has more than a few tricks up its sleeve, including wheel-mounted tire scythes, front-wing machine guns, and even a revolving license plate. 007’s iconic ejector seat really works, powered by a rubber band piston mechanism.

Of course, you’re the one that has to assemble all of this, and you should have a great time building all these gadgets. And, once it is done, you’ll have a fantastic collector’s item on your hands.

For the Batman Fans: LEGO DC Super Heroes 1989 Batmobile (3306 Pieces)

Another accurate movie car, just this time a bit darker. The 1989 Batmobile was expertly recreated here with everything from the smooth curved design to the detailed cockpit. There are plenty of great visual details like the bat logo on the steering wheel and the decorative grappling hook on the side of the car. It wouldn’t be the Batmobile without working gadgets though, so LEGO included pop-up machine guns to match the films.

The included display stand looks great and even allows you to spin the car to face whichever direction you want. The set also comes with Batman, Joker, and Vicki Vale minifigs, and they all perfectly match their appearances in 1989’s Batman.

Inverted Intricacy: LEGO Stranger Things The Upside Down (2287 Pieces)

Millions were drawn in by the mysterious world of Stranger Things, and now you can own a small slice of it for your room. This clever build recreates the Byer Household in both the normal world and The Upside Down. There are plenty of great details tucked away here that any fan of the show will love building, and the eight minifigs of the main cast (plus Hopper’s police truck) make for some great set dressing.

You’ll definitely need to be precise with your piece placement here, but the effort will be well worth it.

Behemoth Gate and Creature: LEGO Jurassic Park T. Rex Rampage (3120 Pieces)

LEGO has released many dinosaur sets over the years with varying results, but this Jurassic Park set has to be the best to date. Standing at 13 inches tall, the large size of the T. Rex allows it to have an organic and convincing design that simply looks amazing.

You also get the iconic Jurassic Park gateway, which is spot on—it even has some movie scene recreations on the back. it’s also great to get minifigs of the main cast. For any fan of the original Jurassic Park, this set is absolutely killer.

For the Harry Potter Fans: LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle (6020 Pieces)

LEGO has made many Hogwarts Castle sets over the years, each one improving on the last. The latest set takes the cake though, with every part of the castle covered in fantastic. The exterior is detailed and eye-catching—the cliff the castle is built into is a great touch, as is the tiny dragon hanging off the tower. But the interior is where things get really interesting.

There are multiple rooms laid throughout the castle with plenty of details and references fans will love discovering. The interior is built on a micro-scale, meaning the 27 micro-figures included in the set will fit in perfectly (although, the set does also come with four minifigs as a bonus).

For the Star Wars Fans: LEGO Star Wars UCS Millennium Falcon (7541 Pieces)

Here’s another set that has been reiterated multiple times. But the latest Ultimate Collector’s Series (UCS) Millennium Falcon will put even the most experienced builders to the test. It’s a behemoth build measuring in at 33 inches long, and both the interior and exterior are finely detailed with small bricks. You can even swap the satellite dish to match either The Empire Strikes Back or The Force Awakens. That swappable nature extends to the minifigs as well, as the set includes enough minifigs to match the cast from either movie (there are seven in total).

However, this set is expensive, so if you want a cheaper set that can give you a similar challenge we recommend either the Rise of Skywalker Millenium Falcon Set (1353 pieces) or the Solo Kessel Run Millennium Falcon Set (1414 pieces), which both come in at under $200. You’ll be losing some detail with these sets, but for those who can’t afford the USC version (or just don’t want to shell out the money), they’re still great and challenging builds.

Miniaturized Landmark: LEGO Architecture Trafalgar Square (1197 Pieces)

This build may look underwhelming at first glance, but upon closer inspection, you’ll realize it packs a lot of detail into its small footprint. Everything about the iconic London landmark is represented here from the flowing fountains to the trees and lamps spread across the courtyard. Even the National Gallery is hiding a few secrets—the interior is decorated with a few paintings and a statue. Despite the small scale, the set includes over a thousand individual pieces.

For the Marvel Fans: LEGO MARVEL The Hulkbuster: Ultron Edition (1363 Pieces)

One of the most advanced mech suits LEGO has created, this Hulkbuster set is perfect in just about every way. The joints are sturdy yet flexible and it can stand by itself (or with the display stand) with no issue. It even comes with an Iron Man minifig that can be placed inside the Hulkbuster for an added bit of movie accuracy. Just make sure you’re getting the right set: this special edition (LEGO catalog number 76105) is much larger and more complex than previous LEGO Hulkbusters.

For the Overwatch Fans: LEGO Overwatch Bastion (602 Pieces)

This build may not be as big as the other sets on this list, but it’s still a great set (especially for Overwatch fans). Bastion has a lot of the same characteristics as the Hulkbuster above, but with his own added charm. You can swap him between his standing and turret stances easily, and he even comes with his bird buddy, Ganymede.

Swappable Pirate Adventure: LEGO Ideas Pirates of Barracuda Bay (2545 Pieces)

It’s been a few years since LEGO has had a proper “Pirate” theme running, so it’s great to see a set come out of the “Ideas” series. This set actually has two different builds you can create: a pirate village built out of a wrecked ship or an intact ship that’s ready to hit the open seas. The interiors are split into multiple rooms including bunkers, taverns, and the captain’s quarters.

The set also comes with eight minifigs that are perfect for decorating the build.

Complex Mechanisms: LEGO Technic Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 (579 Pieces)

When talking about complex LEGO builds, Technic has to get a mention. This building system focuses on complex inner mechanisms, and the Corvette ZR1 is a great example of that. The mechanisms here are subtle but still nice to have: using a knob on the back of the car you can turn the front wheels and, as the back wheels spin, the pistons on the front of the car will move up and down.

It’s nothing major, but it’s a nice finishing touch to breathe some life into the build.

For Car Enthusiasts: LEGO Creator Expert “Big Cars” Line (Varies)

There’s nothing better than working on a model car—except maybe working on a LEGO one. These “Big Cars” sets are truly impressive and are some of the best-looking sets LEGO creates.

LEGO has sets for a Ford Mustang (1471 Pieces), Fiat 500 (960 Pieces), Volkswagen T1 Camper Van (1334 Pieces), and a Volkswagen Beetle (1167 Pieces). All of them look the part with smooth surfaces and accurate proportions. Each car also comes with accessories, which are what really make these sets special.

The Mustang has various mods that can be added or removed from the car, the Fiat includes a few painting related accessories (including a tiny painting of the car itself), the T1 has a cozy camping-oriented interior, and the Beetle is carrying everything someone would need to have a great day at the beach.
