The idea of typing out whole messages on a tiny smartwatch is unpleasant at best. But the entire point of a smartwatch is to carry your phone less. Following up on Tuned, Facebook’s experimental wing has a new Apple Watch app dubbed KIT (Keep in Touch) for Canadians that makes messaging from your smartwatch easier. You can communicate with as little as one tap.
Facebook Messenger already has an Apple Watch app, so you might wonder why the company wants another similar app. But KIT (short for Keep in Touch) should be easier to set up and use. It still uses the Facebook messaging service, but this app focuses on communicating with your close friends and family.
To get started, you scan a QR code, which should alleviate the pesky process of typing email and passwords on a small watch screen. Then you can read messages from friends and family members as usual. When you want to respond, you have single-tap options for emoji, voice dictations, scribbles, or even a location-sharing option.
Think about all the times you have to answer “where are you?” or how often you needed to respond with a quick “Sure thing.” With KIT, you can just hit the location-sharing button, or send a thumbs up.
Right now, KIT appears to be limited to Canada, but we’ll keep an eye out to see if it hits other territories. It’s an experimental app, so it could just disappear as well. With that in mind, if you can download the app, it might be best not to grow too attached.
