Facebook Will Livestream a Virtual Graduation for the Class of 2020

Today, Facebook announced it would hold a virtual graduation on May 15th for all the seniors who will miss out on an in-person graduation ceremony. The ceremony will serve as a stand-in for both high school and college seniors, and feature Oprah Winfrey as a commencement speaker.

With the current pandemic, in-person graduation ceremonies are likely to be canceled nearly everywhere. That’s why Facebook says it’ll host a virtual ceremony on Facebook and Instagram.

The event will see Oprah Winfrey as a commencement speaker, along with other guest speakers like Awkwafina, Jennifer Garner, Lil Nas X, and Simone Biles. And Miley Cyrus will perform “The Climb” as well.

Facebook will mention colleges and high schools, state by state, and show pictures and videos of graduates as well. The company will host the event on Facebook Watch and Instagram, and graduates can host their graduation parties.

On May 11th, Instagram will kick off festivities with “iconic senior moments” featuring things like “most likely” votes and senior skip day. It may not be the same as in-person graduation, but it does sound like it won’t skimp on the Pomp and Circumstance.
