YouTube Music Arrives on Wear OS, But Probably Not on Your Watch

YouTube Music Wear OS watch app

After nearly six years since being released, Google has finally made a YouTube Music Wear OS app for smartwatches. Unfortunately, however, it’s not quite as functional as expected, and for now, it only works on a very small number of watches.

Google’s new YouTube Music app for Wear OS only works on two smartwatches: Samsung’s new Galaxy Watch 4 models that run Wear OS 3. Google confirmed which devices are supported, but we’re hopeful that upcoming watches with Wear OS 3, like the new Fossil Gen 6, will get YouTube Music too.

To make matters worse, 9to5Google says the new YouTube Music app doesn’t let you stream music to your smartwatch. Instead, users can only download songs for playback, but that does mean you can listen to music without an internet connection. Furthermore, you can only download music to the watch while it’s physically on a charger, which means you can’t quickly add songs while you’re on the go running, biking, or out and about.

That said, at least it’s finally here. This is a good first step, and we’re hopeful that Google will integrate more features and expand device compatibility in the future.
