I’ve been enamored with the cosmic photos from the Hubble Telescope for well over half my life. The Great Observatory launched in 1990, and though it had a rocky start, it’s done an amazing job peering into the universe ever since. That is until a few weeks ago when it mysteriously went offline.
The Hubble Telescope has hardware backups and, in some cases, backups for the backups. If something fails, NASA can usually revert to a backup until it can correct the problem (if possible). But that wasn’t working in this case, and NASA couldn’t figure out why. The good news is, NASA managed to get the Hubble Telescope up and running again. The bad news is, it’s not quite out of the woods yet. We’ve got the details in the top story.
